Explain the salient features of hybridisation

Salient features of Hybridization:

Hybridization is only  a theoretical concept which has been put forward to explain  the equivalent character of certain bonds in a covalent molecule. Some salient features of hybridization are listed:

  1. Only the orbitals with small difference in energy take part in the hybridization.
  2. Orbitals of a particular sub - shell cannot hybridize of their own since they have same energy.
  3. The number of hybrid orbitals formed is equal to the number of  atomic orbitals taking part in hybridization .
  4. Hybridization never takes place in isolated atoms and it occurs only when the atom is to take part in bond formation.
  5. The hybridized orbitals are more effective in forming stable bonds than the pure atomic orbitals.
  6. The observed shape of a covalent molecule can be predicted from the type of the hybridization involved.
