Why is the human blood red in colour?

Red blood cells are red because they have hemoglobin. This iron protein is responsible for picking up oxygen in your lungs and transferring the oxygen to every cell in your body. The blood leaving your lungs has more red blood cells with attached oxygen than does the blood flowing into your lung. The red color of our blood is red because our cells contain tiny amounts of iron (which is contained in a molecule called hemoglobin which you may have heard of). Iron turns red when it combines with oxygen.
