Why an army tank weighing more than a thousand tonne rest upon a continuous chain?

An army tank weighing more than a thousand tonne rest upon a continuous chain not to sink in to the ground due to the high pressure applied by it. By resting the army tank weighing more than a thousand tonne upon a continuous chain the area on which the weight of the heavy tank is applied is increased to reduce the pressure applied by the tanker on the ground so it obstructs the tanker from sinking into the ground.
