The award is given to eminent artists for their lifetime achievements in the field of visual arts. It is awarded by the Lalit Kala Akademi, India's National Academy of Art, it is the highest honour in the fine arts conferred by the Government of India. The state Governments also give Lalitha kala awards. The list of professions include Painting, Cartoon, Photography, Sculpture, Drawing.
