The central administration constituted of various departments. There were: finance under the 'Diwan'; the military and the accounts under 'Mir Bakshi'; judiciary under chief 'Qazi'; intelligence under 'Daroga-i-Chowki', etc.Little changes were brought about the existing provincial administration or local government. For efficiency in administration the empire was divided into a number of Subahs being supervised by Subahdars or provincial governors. In the provincial level Dewan (Nazim or Nawab) looked after financial administration. Bakshi used to maintain the liaison between the central and provincial governments. Each Subah was divided into a number of Sarkars which again into Parganas. Kotwal was appointed in each town to maintain law and order. |
