Warren Hastings (6 December 1732 – 22 August 1818), an English statesman, was the first Governor-General of Bengal from 1773 to 1785. He was accused of corruption and impeached in 1787, but after a long trial he was acquitted in 1795. In 1781, Hastings founded Calcutta Madrasa and later it was transformed into Aliah University by the Government of India. In 1784, Hastings supported the foundation of the Bengal Asiatic Society, now the Asiatic Society of Bengal, by the oriental scholar Sir William Jones. |
