what is meant by hybridisation?give example |
The process of mixing of the atomic orbitals to form new hybrid orbitals is called hybridisation .All hybrid orbitals of a particular kind have equal energy ,identical shapes and are symmetrically oriented in space . Conditions necessary for hybridisation 1. Atomic orbitals of the same atom participate in hybridisation .Electrons present in these atomic orbitals do not participate in the hybridisation . 2.The atomic orbitals participating in hybridisation should have nearly equal energy Different types of hybridisation are there .Due to the mixing of , (i) one s and three p orbitals produce four sp3 hybrid orbitals which is an example of sp3 hybridisation (ii) one s and two p- orbitals produce three sp2 hybrid orbitals which is an example of sp2 hybridisation . (iii) one s and one p orbitals produce two sp orbitals which is an example of sp hybridisation . Hybridisation involving s,pand d orbitals are also there . |
