How did the Britishers deal with the dispensing justice in India?

In the mid nineteenth century the British instituted a legal system for India.

The British together was a system of precedents, customs and laws to regulate offence in India.
One of the landmarks of the system was the common law system.
The British put in place a system which mixed both the common law system which depends on judgments and precedents and a system of laws and statutory law.
The British put in place tough laws on sedition and public gatherings to impose order on an increasingly restive population.
