what is emf? what is its unit?

The potential difference between the two poles of the cell in an open circuit(when no current is drawn from the cell) is called the electromotive force(e.m.f) of the cell.
Due to its e.m.f,a cell drives the charge round the circuit.Therefore,e.m.f. of a cell is also defined as the energy supplied by the cell to drive a unit charge round the complete circuit. It is denoted by E.
In S.I,the unit of e.m.f is volt (V) or joule coulomb-1(JC-1)
