Who was the founder of the Hoa Hoa movement ?

Hoa Hao is the name of a village in Tan Chau district, Chau Doc Province, in South Vietnam. It became the name of a religious sect, Hoa Hao Buddhism, when Huynh Phu So (1919–1947), who was a native of the village, established his doctrine in 1939. The Hoa Hao beliefs soon attracted many followers and quickly spread across those provinces in the Mekong Delta known as the rice basket of the South. Within five years of its establishment, during the Japanese occupation of Vietnam, Hoa Hao Buddhism emerged as one of the four major religions in South Vietnam, standing side by side with the other indigenous religion, the Cao Dai. The popularity of Hoa Hao was the result of the charismatic, messianic, and mysterious character of its founder and preacher. He was also regarded as a prophet because of his prediction of the defeat of France, then the colonial power in Vietnam. He proved to be right with the outbreak of World War II and France 's defeat at the hands of Germany.
