Potential Energy is defined as the energy possessed by a body by virtue of its position or shape (configuration).

When a body is lifted without acceleration from ground to some height,work is done against gravity and this work done gets stored in the body in the form of potential energy.i.e.,
P.E = W
       = Fh

 P.E = mgh
