what is acid? |
Acids are chemical compounds found naturally in plants or derived from minerals .An acid is a substance that contains replaceable hydrogen atoms .The number of replaceable hydrogen atoms in an acid is called its basicity .Strength of the acid is determined by the ease with which the hydrogen atoms are removed during a chemical reaction .Acids such as sulphuric acid (H2SO4) ,hydrochloric acid (HCl) and nitric acid (HNO3) are strong acids .Acids like sulphurous acid (H2SO3) ,carbonic acid (H2CO3) and nitrous acod (HNO2) are weak acids .All organic acids are weak acids . Pure acids are concentrated acids .When they are mixed with water they become diluted. To prepare dilute acids ,acid is added to water Acid change the color of the indicators . blue litmus _________> red methyl orange _________> red phenolphthalene _________> colourless |
