HOW ELECTRONS GET NEGATIVE CHARGE?

When a high electrical potential is applied across a gas taken in a discharge tube at a very  low pressure some radiations are emitted from the cathode .These radiations are called cathode rays .These rays get deflected towards the positively charged plate when placed in an electric field. Thus cathode rays were found to consist of negatively charged particles .These negatively charged particles were found to be electrons.
