Atom is the basic unit of matter that consists of a central nucleus which is surrounded by negatively charged electrons .The nucleus consists of positively charged protons and electrically neutral neutrons .Atoms of the same element may not be alike in  all respects as seen in case of isotopes which are atoms of the same element having same atomic number but different mass numbers .
