WHAT IS MEANT BY REDOX REATION/. |
A chemical reaction involving oxidation of one substance and the reduction of the other is called a redox reaction .Redox reaction involves loss or gain of electrons where oxidation and reduction occur simultaneously For example , Cl2 + H2S _________> 2HCl +S Hydrogen sulphide (H2S) is oxidised to sulphur (S) (removal of hydrogen by chlorine ) Chlorine (Cl2) is reduced to hydrogen chloride (HCl) (gains hydrogen from hydrogen sulphide ) In the above reactions hydrogen sulphide is a reducing agent and chlorine is the oxidising agent . |
