Twice in the history of Karnataka Chalukyas were prominent rulers. The first time, Pulakesi I (543–566 CE) established the Chalukya dynasty in then western Deccan. They grew powerful and ruled Vatapi as their capital. After 250 years of powerful rule the Rashtrakutas of Manyakheta defeated them. In 973, Tailapa the Second of the Chalukya Dynasty became independent. Kalyana was his capital. Pulikeshi II(610–642 CE) was the most famous ruler of the Chalukya dynasty. |
