what is hydrogenation.what is its industrial application? |
Addition of hydrogen to organic compounds in presence of catalyst (Pt or Ni) under high pressure at about 2000C is called hydrogenation . Industrial application : 1.Hydrogenation is used for the processing of vegetable oils .It converts liquid vegetable oils into semi-solid fats . 2.Hydrogenation of coal : It is the passage of hydrogen under high pressure over powdered coal in presence of catalyst at a suitable temperature .Hydrogenation of coal leads to conversion of coal to a product similar to petroleum containing a higher percentage of hydrogen . 3. Hydrocracking of heavy residues into diesel is another application. 4.In petrochemical processes, hydrogenation is used to convert alkenes and aromatics into saturated alkanes and cycloalkanes which are less toxic and less reactive . |
