Universal law of gravitation: Every body in the universe attracts every other body with a force which is directly proportional to the product of their masses and inversely proportional to the square of the distance between them. Acceleration with which a body falls towards the centre of the earth is called acceleration due to gravity what is meant by directly proportional and indirectly proportional in this statement? |
Here, the UNIVERSAL LAW OF GRAVITATION says that (i) the force between two bodies is directly proportional to the product of their masses.ie, F ? m1 x m2 (ii) the force between two bodies is inversely proportional to the square of the distance between them.ie, F ? 1 / r2 therefore ,if we double the distance between two bodies ,the gravitational force becomes one-fourth and if we halve the distance between two bodies, then the gravitational force becomes four times. |
