Universal law of gravitation: Every body in the universe attracts every other body with a force which is directly proportional to the product of their masses and inversely proportional to the square of the distance between them. Acceleration with which a body falls towards the centre of the earth is called acceleration due to gravity what is meant by directly proportional and indirectly proportional in this statement?

Here, the UNIVERSAL LAW OF GRAVITATION says that

(i) the force between two bodies is directly proportional to the product of their masses.ie,
                                   F ? m1 x m2
(ii) the force between two bodies is inversely proportional to the square of the distance between them.ie,
                                    F ? 1 / r2
therefore ,if we double the distance between two bodies ,the gravitational force becomes one-fourth and if we halve the distance between two bodies, then the gravitational force becomes four times.
