what is the difference between IR and UV rays?

Infra-red rays are heat radiation. About 60% of the solar radiation is infra-red in nature. The frequency range of infra-red rays is 3 × 1011 to 4 × 1014 Hz.
Infra-red rays are used in solar water heaters or cookers and to take photographs during the conditions of fog, smoke.

The ultra-violet rays are part of solar spectrum. Their frequency range is 8 × 1014 to 8 × 1016 Hz.
Uses. 1. Ultra-violet rays destroy bacteria and hence it is used for sterilizing surgical instruments.
          2. As ultra-violet rays can cause photoelectric effect, they are used in burglars alarm.
