what is band theory of conduction? briefly explain it..

 Band theory describes the behavior of electrons in solids.The electrons of a single isolated atom occupy atomic orbitals and form  discrete set of energy levels.This discrete band of energy levels are broadly divided in to valance band and conduction band. The energy bands thus formed can be thought of as the collection of the individual energy levels of electrons surrounding each atom.
                        The band of energy levels and energy of an electron to jump over these energy levels are responsible for the conduction in the solids.According to the conductivity they can be divided in to conductors ,insulators and semiconductors.Their band gap is  shown :
