What is surface tension?

The property of a liquid at rest by virtue of which its free surface behaves like a streched elastic membrane and tries to occupy as small an area as possible,is called surface tension.
It may also be defined as the force of tension acting across a unit length of an imaginary line drawn on the free surface of a liquid at rest, the direction of this force being perpendicular to the line and tangential to the surface.
