what is the 'Doctrine of Lapse in history'?

According to the Indian traditions the king’s son would be the next king but if he didn’t have a son he had to adopt a son, the British General Lord Dalhousie didn’t accept this, he passed out a policy known as “The Doctrine of Lapse”, which stated that if the king didn’t inherit a natural son the British would take away his kingdom financially and politically. Thus British fond out another way to annex more territories. Through this policy the British took over the kingdoms of Satara, Nagpur and Jhansi.
