5 YEARS AGO A MAN WAS FOUR TIMES AS OLD AS HIS SON.AFTER 6 YEARS,HIS AGE EXCEEDS TWICE HIS SON'S AGE BY 17 YEAR. FIND THEIR PRESENT AGES.

Let present age of man be x and that of son be y.
5 years ago,
age of man = x - 5
age of son = y-5
According to the given condition,
x - 5 = 4(y - 5)
ie , x - 4y = -15---------(1)
After  6 years,
age of man = x + 6
age of son = y + 6
According to the given condition,
x + 6 - 2(y + 6) = 17
ie, x - 2y = 23---------(2)
(2) - (1) gives
2y = 38 implies y = 19
from (1), x = 61
Hence present age of man = 61 and
present age of son = 19.
