Does pure water conduct electricity? If not how can we make it conducting? |
No, Pure water does not conduct electricity. This is because pure water is devoid of any salts. In order to make it to conduct impurities and minerals should be added. It contains hydrogen ions (H+) and hydroxyl ions (OH-) but the amount of ions present are not sufficient to conduct electricity. In addition to that, pure water does not contain mineral salts which are naturally dissolved in water. Hence, pure water is a poor conductor of electricity. It can be made by conducting by adding acids, bases and salts. For example salt water will conduct electricity. So Pure water can conduct electricity when a pinch of common salt is added to it, as salt solution is conducting in nature. |
