why does, in the periodic table the element argon is having more atomic size than chlorine

as argon is a noble gas.... no matter that atomic size decreases wen we go down in a period but in case of noble gases, van der waals forces are present in b/w nucleus n electrons....
so we consider van der waals radius in case of noble gases but in case of other elements we consider covalent radius....
