WHAT IS GEOMETRICAL ISOMERISM?

Geometrical isomerism results from a restriction in rotation about double bonds ,or about single bonds in cyclic compounds .The restriction of rotation about the carbon-carbon double bond is responsible for the geometrical isomerism in alkenes .
Example: Cis and trans isomers present in 1,2 dichloroethene can be represented as
Cis-1,2-dichloroethene.png                      Trans-1,2-dichloroethene.png
cis-1,2- dichloroethene                 trans-1,2-dichloroethene
