What is called Republic?

A republic is a form of government in which the supreme power rest with the people and representatives or officers for the people are officially granted alienable powers to represent them in "public matters" via a constitution. Offices of state are subsequently directly or indirectly elected or appointed. In modern times, a common simplified definition of a republic is a government where the head of state is not a monarch.

For example: India is a republic country.
