WHAT IS MINORITIES AND MARGINALISATION?

The term minority is most commonly used to refer to communities that are numerically small in relation to the rest of the population. However, it is a concept that goes well beyond numbers. It encompasses issues of power, access to resources and has social and cultural dimensions.

Marginalisation is when a person or community is pushed to the edge of society. This is a potential effect of discrimination because a person or a community is made to stand out and made to be different from everyone else and they can therefore feel like they are all alone and marginalized from the rest of society or in the case of a health and social care sector, other service users.
