The first World War started on 28th July 1914. It ended on 11th November 1918. Cause of the war can be divided into two categories - the long term causes and the immediate cause. The long term causes were: (a) Europe divided into power blocs. (b) Militant nationalism and mutual rivalries (c) Militarism and armament race (d) Clash of imperialist interests and colonial rivalry (e) Territorial conflicts (f) Absence of effective international machinery The immediate cause was: (a) The Sarajevo incident - In June 1914, the Archduke Francis Ferinand, the heir-apparent to the throne of Austria, went to Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia, on an official visit. On 28 June 1914 the Archduke and his wife Sophie were shot dead. The assassin, Gavrilo Princep, was a 19 year old Bosnian student. This murder had been planned in Serbia by a secret society called the Black Hand. The Austrians blamed Serbians as the conspirators of this crime. Austria sent a stiff ultimatum to Serbia to apprehend the criminals and hand them over to the Austrian Government. Austria also sought a ban on anti-Austrian publications, meetings and institutions. When Serbia refused to comply with some of the above conditions, Austria declared war on Serbia on 28th July 1914. |
