Natonalist tensions emerged in the balkans because of: 1. Ethnic Variations - The Balkans comprising modern day Romania, Bulgaria, Albania, Greece, Macedonia, Croatia, Bosnia, Slovenia, Herzegovina, Serbia and Montenegro had geograhical and ethnic variations. 2. Disintegration of Ottoman Empire - The ideas of romantic nationalism in the Balkans, and the disntegration of the Ottoman Empire made this region very explosive. 3. Subjugation - The Balkan people tried to claim independence from the foreign powers by using history to prove that they had once been independent. |
