The Greek philosopher Thales of Miletus (640 - 546) reported some of the earliest observations about magnets in the sixth century BC.Greeks used to call the magical stones, which had the power of attracting iron objects ,by the name Lodestone. As large deposits of Lodestone were found in an area in an ancient Greece named Magnesia. So,these pieces of Lodestone were later called magnets.Later,it was found that these stones are made up of a naturally occuring iron ore and the ore was named magnetite.
