WHAT IS OCTECT ELECTRON CONFIGURATION

The chemical reactivity of any element is related to the number and distribution of electrons in its atom .
W.Kossel and G.N Lewis observed the atoms of all the noble gas elements except  Helium contained 8 electrons in their outer most shell .All other atoms during chemical combination tend to achieve this configuration .Based on the observation they proposed a  theory for the formation of chemical bonds According to this theory ,the atoms tend to adjust the arrangement of their electrons in such a way that they achieve eight electrons in their outermost shell .This is known as the octet rule and the atoms have eight electrons in the outermost shell satisfy octet electron configuration .
