Alpha particles are material particles consists of two protons and two neutrons bound together into a particle identical to a nuclei of helium atom .The velocity of alpha particle is about 1/10 of the velocity of light .These particle ionise the gas through which they pass .Being relatively larger in size they cannot easily penetrate though the solid matter .These particles can penetrate only through the layers of solids such as mica, aluminium etc .
