In India during the 6th century BC, caste system was still prevalent. Buddhism and Jainism was a sort of revolt against the prevaling religion and the social system. Both these religions fought for the rights of the Shudras, the most neglected people so far. Marriages were usually arranged by parents but Gandharva marriage and Swayambara also existed. Marriages took place inside the castes. The position and status of women declined inspite of certain references of general educated women. Varanasi and Taxila were the great centres of learning and education. Most of the people lived a very simple life in villages. People generally wore cotton clothes though woolen and silk were also used. Men and women were fond of ornaments. Wheat, barley, ghee, honey, meat fruits, etc., were the common items included in the diet. Horse racing, archery, wrestling, chariot race, etc., were the means of amusement. |
