The term "Mesopotamia" is derived from
two Greek terms mesos, meaning 'middle' and potamoi, 'rivers', so the name
literally means 'between the rivers.' Peoples living in the fertile
valleys lying between the Tigris and Euphrates
valley, is known as Mesopotamians. The history and culture of
Mesopotamian civilization is inextricably connected to the ebb and flow of the
Tigris and Euphrates
Rivers . The earliest
communities developed to the north but by 5000 B.C. communities had spread
south to the rich alluvial plain. The economy of these communities was
primarily agricultural and approximately 100-200 people lived in these
permanently established villages. |
