about chloro fluro carbons? |
Chlorofluorocarbons
or CFC are compounds formed by the combination of chlorine
and fluorine with carbon. These can be liquefied easily under pressure
and then they evaporate with a cooling effect. Hence CFC are
extensively used in refrigerators, air conditioners and air coolers.
These are also used in spray perfumes.
The widespread use of chlorofluorocarbons play a key role in the destruction of ozone in the stratosphere .Chlorofluoro carbons being chemically inert,so they do not react with the substances with which they come in contact and thus upfloat through the atmosphere and enter into the stratosphere .In the stratosphere ,the chlorofluorocarbons absorb ultraviolet light from the solar radiations .As a result, they decompose to liberate free Cl atoms .The free chlorine catalyses the decomposition of ozone . Cl +O3 ________>ClO +O2 ClO +O ________>Cl +O2 Thus the net reaction is , O3 +O _________>2O2 So,the use of fluorocarbons shall have to be banned to save the ozone layer . |
