what do you mean by reverse osmosis?

Reverse osmosis is the process by which water molecules are forced through a semipermeable membrane under pressure .This happens when the pressure higher than the osmotic pressure is applied to the solution side ,the pure solvent flows out of the solution through semipermeable membrane .The system gives high quality filtered water .This is used  for the desalination of sea water or purifying water that contains higher salt concentration .
