what is the principle behind optical fibre

The principle behind the optical fibre is total internal reflection.
Total internal reflection: when a light ray falls from denser medium to rarer medium with an incidence angle greater than the critical angle it reflects back by hitting the boundary of the two medium. Equation for the critical angle is arcsin(n2/n1).
n2  & n1 are the refractive indices of the two mediums.
