Principle of potometer?

A Potometer is an instrument  which measures the uptake of water by a leafy shoot. Water is taken up by a suitable leafy shoot connected  to the apparatus. As water is taken up, a small air bubble is drawn along a horizontal capillary tube, so that the rate of movement of the bubble corresponds to the rate of water uptake by the shoots.
