The doctrine of Lapse was a policy of annexation  introduced by Lord Dalhousie. According to this, if the ruler of a protected or dependent state died without any natural heir his state would automatically Lapse. The victim of this doctrine are Stara (1848), Jaitpur, Sambapur (1850), Udapur (1852), Nagpur (1853) and Jhansi (1854).
