1. What is the globe?

The globe is small model of the earth. It shows us the shape and location of the continents, oceans and seas on a smaller scale. It also shows the shape and location of countries and the location of important cities.

2. What do you mean by axis of rotation?

The earth constantly rotates or turns around its axis of rotation. The axis of rotation of the globe is similar to that of the earth. It is also titled at an angle of 23%.

3. What is axis?

Globe can be turned around a line passing though it. This line is called the axis. The axis is not straight. It is tilted at an angle of 23 1/2o.

4. What are poles?

The two points of the axis of rotation are called the poles. To the north is the north pole and to the south is the south pole.

5. What is equator?

Midway between the poles is an imaginary line circling the earth. It is called the equator.

6. What is hemispheres?

Equator divides the earth into two equal halves, called the hemispheres. To the north of the equator is the Northern hemisphre and to the South of the equator is the Southern hemispheres.

7. Why is globe not very useful?

A globe is not very useful because it cannot see all the places at the sometime. It is difficult to carry a globe from one place to another place. All the places on the Earth cannot be shown on a globe.

8. How is a globe useful?

Being a spherical model of the Earth actually looks like. It helps in the study of the Earth and gives us an idea about the shape and location of different continents, countries oceans and seas.

9. What are latitudes?

Latitudes are horizontal lines drawn on a globe or map that go around the Earth, parallel to the equator.Latitudes are also known as parallels.

10. What are longitudes?

Longitudes are vertical lines drawn on a globe or map, that run from the North pole to the South Pole.It measures the distance of a place east or west of the Prime Meridian. Longitudes are also known as meridians.

11. What are the features of latitudes?

       (i)  Latitudes run parallel to each other in the east-west direction.

(ii) They are at an equal distance from each other.

(iii)  All of them form  complete circles, except the North and South poles, which are points.

(iv)  The latitudes decrease in length as it move from the equator to the poles.

12. What are the important latitudes?

Other than the equator and poles, there are four other important latitudes. These are.

        (i) Tropic of cancer at 23 1/2oN

(ii) Arctic circle at 66 1/2oN

(iii) Tropic of Capricorn at 23 1/2oS

(iv) Antarctic circle at 66 1/2oS

13. What is prime meridian?

The longitude running through the old Royal observatory at Greenwich near London is marked 0o. It is called the Green which meridian or the Prime Meridian.

14. What is international Date Line?

The 180o East and 180o West longitudes next and form a single line on the opposite side of the world, called the 180o longitude or the International Date Line.

15. What are the features of longitudes?

       (i) The lines of longitudes are semi-circles that run from one place to the other pole.

(ii) They run in a true North- South direction.

(iii) They are speed farthest apart at the equator and come together to a point at the poles.

(iv) The latitudes and longitudes cut each other at right angles.
