1. What was the feeling of Mr.Nuttel towards Mrs.Sappleton?

Mr.Nuttel said that he was feeling so pity for Mrs.Sappleton's condition. It was so sad that a tragedy happened in her life.

On hearing from Miss Vera about the return of Mr.Sappleton through the window, Mr.Nuttel got frightened , thinking how could a dead man come in the house through the open window.

Mrs. Sappleton replied, “A very extraordinary man, Mr. Nuttel. He was keen on talking about his illness all the time. Like an ignorant person,he dashed off without a word of good-bye. One would think that he had seen a ghost".

Miss Vera said. “I can explain. I think it was the dog that frightened him. He told me that he had fear of dog. He explained to me that he fell into a pit when some wild dogs had chased him. He said that he had to spend the whole night in it with the dogs barking at him. So he is so much afraid of dogs".

Mr.Sappleton did not die. This was made up and told by Miss Vera to Mr.Nuttel, as she wanted to make fool of Mr.Nuttel.

Mr. Nuttel was frightened when he saw Mr. Sappleton coming with his dog. Miss Vera told that it was actually the dog that frightened him. He had once fallen into a pit and had to spend a whole night with wild dogs barking at him. So he was very much afraid of dogs.

14. Explain the sense of humour of Miss Vera.

Vera knew that Mr. Nuttel had some nervous disorder and that he was afraid of dogs. In order to frighten him she told him that, her uncle who was believed to have died, would come back. But her uncle Mr. Sappleton was not dead. When he came back with his dog, Miss Vera pretended to be stiffened with fear. Mr. Nuttel was frightened to see Mr. Sappleton and his dog and he ran out of the house. Miss Vera then told Mr. Sappleton that Mr. Nuttel had a horror of dogs. So we can see that Miss Vera was a lady with a good sense of humour who could make up interesting stories.
