Topics

1. Name the three conditions necessary for a group of cells to form a tissue.

A group of cells forming a tissue should have the same structure, should perform the a particular function and should have the same origin.

2. How is our human body organised?

Our body is made up of cells which group together to form tissues. Tissues group together to form organs. Many organs form an organ system. Different organ systems constitute an organism.

3. "Cell  ----------- tissue --------- organ --------- organ system ---------- organisms" give examples of each in our body.

Cell - Example - Neuron

Tissues - example - Nerve tissue

Organ - example - Brain

Organ system - example - Nervous system

Organism - example - Human being

4. What is the utility of tissues in organisms?

Tissues consists of cells whihc work together to achieve a particular function. For example Meristamatic tissues bring baout the growth of plant body, xylem tissue conduct, water, nervous tissue transmits messages throughout our body.

5. Differentiate plant tissue from animal tissue.

Plant Tissue  Animal Tissue
  • Many plant tissues provide support and structural strength because plant have sedentary existance.
  • Animals have adapted to a motile life so tissues are more active and flexible.
  • Plant body retains many dead tissue which provide mechanical support and need only less maintainenace.
  • Animals have more active tissues which consume more energy and need maintenance.
  • Plant tissues usually do not form organs and organ systems are absent in plants.
  • In animals tissues are mostly grouped to form organs and organ systems are formed from organs.

6. "Basement membrane" - What is it?

Basement membrane is a non-cellular membrane on which epithelial cells rest on. It is seen below or at the base of epithelial layer. It separates epithelium from the underlying layer of other tissues.

7. What happens if lung alveoli is made up of stratified epithelium?

Lung alveoli could not be made by stratified epithelium because respiratory gases need to be exchanged through its wall. If it is made by stratified epithelium respiratory gases could not be exchanged.

8. What is the advantage of stratified squamous epithelium covering our skin?

Stratified sqamous epithelium consists of many layers of cells in which outer layers are dead. This give much protection because skin is a part where constant wear and tear occurs.

9. With what type of tissues are glands made up of?

Glands are made up of glandular epithelial tissue, which are secretory in nature.

10. Why is blood considered as fluid corrective tissue and bone as solid connective tissue?

The matrix ofblood is fluid where as bone has a solid matrix, this is why blood is considered as fluid connective tissue and bone as solid connective tissue.

11. Differentiate bone from Catilage.

Tendon Ligament
  • Both are fibrous
  • Connective tissues.
  • Strong and nonflexible tissue.
  • Strong but flexible than bone.
  • Matrix composed of calcium and phoshorus compounds.
  • Matrix composed of proteins and sugars.

12. Differentiate tendon from ligament.

Tendon Ligament
  • Both are fibrous.
  • Connective tissues.
  • Connect bone to a muscle.
  • Connect bone to another bone.
  • Great strength but limited flexibility.
  • Considerable strength but elastic.

13. What do you mean by matrix of a tissue? Give one example.

Matrix is the extracellular medium in which connective tissue cells are embedded. Matrix may be solid or liquid. For example, Blood Plasma is the matrix of blood in which blood corpuscles (cells) are embedded.

14. Differentiate RBC from WBC.

RBC WBC
  • Also known as erythrocytes
  • Also known as leucocytes.
  • Transports respiratory gases.
  • Helps us to fight against diseases.
  • Red in colour due to the presence of haemoglobin.
  • Colourless
  • Non nucleated
  • Uninucleated
  • 1 type
  • 5 types
  • Number ranges from 4.5 -5.5 million/mm3 of blood.
  • Number ranges from 4000 - 6000/mm3 of blood

15. Name the five different types of WBC's?
