Downloading refers to the process of transferring files from a net server to one’s local machine.

Uploading refers to the process of transferring files from one’s local machine onto a net server. It is the opposite process of downloading.

In an email-message, apart from the message text, there are some other fields, which are used for some specific purposes as listed below:

         i.    To: In this field, the e-mail addresses of the recipient is given.
        ii.    CC: In this field, the e-mail address of the Carbon Copy recipients of the mail, are mentioned.
       iii.    BCC: In this field, the email addresses of the blind carbon copy recipients are mentioned.

5. What is search engine? What is its usage?

A search engine is a program that searches through a database of web pages for particular information.

Sometimes, it is required to view some sites or pages that pertain to a specific information. For instance, a student interested in engineering, might want to know what streams are offered by various engineering colleges in India. In such a case, search engine is very useful, as it provides a facility to search for the desired information.

6. How does search engine work?

A search engine works with the help of following three elements:

  • A software called spider or bot
  • Indexing software and database
  • Search Algorithm

    i) Spider (also called bot or robot or web- crawler or agent sometimes comb the Net and collect the documents web addresses, and send them to search engine’s indexing software.

    ii) The indexing software extracts information from the documents and stores it in database.

   iii) From this database, using a search method or search algorithm, the search engine assembles a web page displaying the matching result as hyperlinks.

7. What is chatting? Is it necessary to be online (that is, connected to Internet) while chatting?

Chat is online textual conversation wherein the message typed by the sender is instantly made available to the recipient .

Yes, it is necessary to be online while chatting.

8. Compare e-mail and video conferencing.

1. E-mail refers to sending and receiving message electronically. A two-way videophone conversation among multiple participants is called video conferencing.
2. For email, the sender and the recipient need not be online at the same time. For video conferencing the sender and the recipients must be online at the same time.
3. E-mail can be retrieved at a later time by the recipients. Video conferencing is instant. It is not available at later time.

9. What is the significance of anonymous user in FTP?

In order to use FTP effectively, one needs to be an authorized user. However, anonymous FTP (i.e., logging in as an anonymous user) is a method whereby FTP servers allow the general public to access files on an FTP server.

10. What is uploading? Can an anonymous user upload? If yes, how? If no, why?

Uploading of files refers to the transfer of files from one’s computer onto FTP server.

An anonymous user, generally, is not allowed to upload files. This is because, uploading requires permissions to do so and anonymous user have permissions to download only.

However, on many UNIX FTP servers, there is a incoming directory. If this directory is there, then anonymous users have permission to upload only in this directory and nowhere else.

Newsgroup refers to online community bulletin board, wherein users can post messages reply to messages, or just lead the message. It is also called forum.

(i) e- Learning refers to the learning that takes place in an electronically simulated environment.

(ii) Availing the banking services through electronic measures via Internet is called e-banking.

(iii) The process of shopping done over the Internet is called online shopping or e-shopping. Both products and services can be purchased through online shopping.

(iv) Making reservations of tickets or hotel rooms or tourist packages etc through Internet is known as e-Reservation.

(v) An e-group refers to an online community where people discuss on topics of common interests. A message posted in such a discussion is known as a post. All the posts are listed together on a discussion board, which is viewable to all the members of the group.

14. What is social networking? What are its benefits?

Social networking is the grouping of individual into specific groups via online means through social sites.

Its benefits are:

(i) People sharing common interests can connect and form a group.

(ii) Individuals from all around the world can connect and there by know about new cultures and language etc.

Some dangers associated with social networking are:

(i) data theft and virus can attack.

(ii) Online predators claim to be someone else.

(iii) Cyber blackmailing may take place.

A blog refers to an online journal where entries are posted. The word blog has been derived from we BLOG.

The user who keeps the blog and regularly updates it, is known as the blogger.

Telnet is one of the oldest protocols in the TCP / IP suite,first developed in 1960s.Telnet allows a user on one computer system to directly access and interact with remote computers anywhere on a network or the Internet.The TCP/IP protocol is used to transmit information between the Telnet client and the Telnet server.Telnet is text-based and only the keyboard can be used for navigation.

The connection between the local system and the remote system is referred  to as the Telnet session.

Search Engine Spiders play a large part in determining how strong the website is in it’s relative nature of content. There are basically two types of search engines. The first is by robots called crawlers or spiders.

Search engines use spiders to index websites.A spider ‘,’ is an automated program that is run by the search engine system. Spider visits a web site, read the contents in the same place, site Meta tags and also follow the links that the site connects. The spider returns all that information back to a central repository where data is indexed. It will visit each link you have on your website and index those sites as well.

34.What is signature? What are the steps to create a signature ?

A signature is a personalised text of one or more lines containing information like the sender's full name and address, a quote or favourite saying or any other information.

To create a signature, follow these steps.

               1. Open your e-mail account.

               2. Click Options. A web page showing a list of option appears.

               3. Click signature. A new web page appears.

               4. Enter the text for the signature in the given text box.

               5. Click the Save button.
