Operating System

An operating system is a program designed to run other programs on a computer. A computer’s operating system is its most important program. It is considered the backbone of a computer, and it  manage both software and hardware resources.

Function of an Operating System

The Operating System translates your commands into the computer language which the computer can understand.

GUI

GUI -Graphical User Interface .This means that we can use different programs simply by clicking on pictures called ICONS.It is very user friendly software.

Windows is a Graphical User Interface.

Components of Windows

• Desktop
• The Start button
• The Taskbar
• Icons

Desktop

The Desktop is the opening screen in Windows.In Desktop we see Icons ,Taskbar and Start button.

Start button

The Start button is used to start the programs in Windows. Click on the Start button,the Start Menu appears.The Start menu provides a list of programs .

Taskbar

The Taskbar is present at the bottom of the Desktop.It include Start button the left and the icons for different programs are in right.The time and date are also displayed here.

ICONS

The small pictures with labels are called ICONS.Each icon represents a program stored in the computer and has a name.

My Computer icon

  When you click on the computer icon the computer window opens up.

The computer programs allows to go quickly to the different areas of the computer.

The Icons representing the hard disk drive and the CD drive or the any other devices attached to the computer.

A computer may have  one or more hard disks.They are usually as the C drive or D drive.

Recycle Bin

The Recycle bin is like a dustbin of the computer that is the deleted file are stored in it.

Restore the deleted items

To restore a deleted items,Click on the item that want to restore.Then click Restore this item.

Internet Explorer Icon

The Internet Explorer is a program which help to work on the Internet.

Network icon

The Network icon is used to connect  the computer with other computers.

Rearranging Icons on the Desktop:

• Right Click on an empty area of the desktop.A menu appears.
• Select option.A sub menu appears.Sort  By
• Select  Name or Size or Type.
• The icons will be rearranged .

File

A File is an item that contains information.The text or image or music are files.

Folder

A Folder is a container that can used to store files.

Subfolder

A folder within a folder is called a subfolder.Each folder can contain many files.

Libraries

Inside the Computer window we can see the Libraries Folder on the left side.

The Libraries Folder contains many sub folders that are:

• Document
• Music
• Picture
• Video

Menu and Sub menu

In windows a Menu is a list of programs.

A menu within another menu is a Submenu.

Window

When open a program,file or folder,it appears on the screen in a box or frame called a Window.

Main part of a Window

Title bar,Minimize,Maximize and Close buttons,Ribbon,Scroll bar,Borders and corners.

Maximize,minimize and close button.

The Maximize button is used to enlarge the whole screen.

The Minimize button  is used to hide the windows.

The Close button  is used to close the window.

Scrollbar

The Scrollbar is used to up and down the window.

Ribbon

The Ribbon is a list of options that can click to make choices in a program.
