Main parts of a computer

A Computer has four main parts.

 Monitor             CPU

 Keyboard         Mouse

Monitor

A monitor looks like a television.It shows text,images and data.The data entered from keyboard is displayed on the monitor.It is also called VDU(Visual Display Unit).

 

CPU

CPU stands for Central Processing Unit.It is the main part of a computer.It also called the brain of the computer because it does all the works for the computer.

                           

Different parts of a CPU

                                 ♦ Control Unit

                                 ♦ Arithmetic Logic Unit

                                 ♦ Memory Unit.

Control Unit

Control Unit controls all the operations that are performed in the CPU.

Arithmetic Logic Unit

It is used for performing arithmetic and logic operations.

Memory Unit

It is used to store data and information.

Keyboard

A keyboard is a device through which information is entered into the computer.A standard keyboard has 104 keys.It has number keys,alphabet keys,function keys,arrow keys and special keys.

 

                           

Mouse

A mouse is a pointing device.It is used to move cursor and select objects on the screen.It has two buttons and a scroll key in the middle.It is used to click and drag things on the computer monitor.

                           

Printer

A printer is used to take printouts and prepare permanent documents.

                 

Joystick

The joystick makes computer games a lot of fun .When it moves ,it give signals to the computer.

Touch pad

A laptop computer has a touch pad which works like the mouse.

Microphone

The microphone allows us to record speech and songs in the computer.

                   

Speaker

Speakers are used to listen to music.

                     

CD and DVD

CDs and DVDs are a part of the computer memory.They are used to store documents ,pictures ,songs and movies.The CD or DVD has to be placed in the CD or DVD player of the computer.

Pen Drive

A pen drive is very small in size but it can store hundreds of documents ,pictures and songs.It forms a part of the computer's memory.

Floppy disk

A floppy disk is a part of the computer's memory.It is used to store small amount of data.It works when it is pushed into the floppy drive of the CPU unit.Floppy disks are no longer used any more.

UPS

UPS stands for Uninterrupted Power Supply .The UPS keeps the computer working even when the power supply is off.

                           

The steps to switch ON a computer:

To switch ON a computer follow the steps given below:

1.Switch on the Power Supply button.

2.Switch on the UPS.

3.Switch on the CPU.

4.Switch on the Monitor.

5.Wait for the system to Start.

The steps to switch OFF a computer

To Switch OFF a computer follow the steps given below:

1.Save the files and Close all running programs

2.Click the Start button

3.Click the Shut down button

4.Select the Shutdown option to close the computer

5.Click OK.

6.Switch off the Monitor.

7.Switch off the UPS.

8.Switch off the main Power supply button.

Restart option

The Restart option is used to restart the computer.

Stand by option

Stand by option is used to keep the computer open at low-power state.
