1. What are charts ?

Charts are pictorial representation of data. They are easy to read and understand.

2. Name the different types of charts in MS Excel

The various types of charts provided by Excel are

  • The Line chart
  • The Bar chart
  • The Pie chart
  • The Doughnut chart

3. What is meant by Line chart ?

A line chart shows data trend at equal intervals. Line charts are useful for depicting the change in a value over a period of time.

Example:- Chart showing the pass percentage in a particular standard of a school in the previous four years.

4. What is Bar chart  ?

A bar chart shows change in data trend over a period of time or illustrates comparisons between different items. Bar charts can be represented in tabular or columnar form.

Example : Chart showing the life expectancy of some animals.

5. What is Pie chart ?

A Pie chart displays the contribution of each value to a total. Each data point is represented by one “slice” of the circular pie chart.

Example : Chart representing the fund allotments by the government for various development activities.

6. What is Doughnut chart ?

The Doughnut chart contains more than one data series. Each ring of the doughnut chart represents one data series. This type of chart is useful in identifying the contribution of each series.

7. From where do we get the Chart Wizard icon and what is its use?

Chart Wizard icon is present in the Standard Toolbar of Excel. Chart Wizard icon is  used to create a chart in MS Excel.

8. What are the steps to insert a chart ?

  1. To insert a chart first we must select the range of cells of data that we want to appear on the chart.
  2. From the Standard Toolbar select the Chart Wizard icon or click on the Insert menu and click on chart option. Then Chart Wizard dialog box appears.
  3.  In the Chart Type, select the type of chart that we would like to use and click on Next button.
  4. The selected data will appear in the Data Range tab. Click on Next button.
  5. Here we have to specify the place of chart i.e.  in the same sheet or in a different sheet. If we want to place it in the same sheet select the second option.
  6. Click on Finish button to insert the chart.

9. Write the steps to resize and move a chart.

To resize a chart,

  • Select the chart by clicking within the area of the chart once.
  • Black handles will appear on the boundary of the chart.
  • Place the cursor on a corner, so it changes to a double-headed arrow.
  • Click and drag the outline to a slightly wider, shaded box.

10. State  whether the following statements are true or false.

a)  Charts are pictorial representation of data.

b)  The Chart Option is present in the Insert menu.

c)  Bar chart can be represented only in tabular form.

d)  Charts cannot be moved and resized.
