1. Why are the safety measures essential in using roads?

    With the increasing of population, and the use of automobiles, with the use of all types of vehicles, the volume of traffic in towns and cities also has increased substantially. There has been a large increase in the number of road accidents in India. Hundreds of lives are lost every day. So safety measures should be followed in using roads.

   The growing traffic can be managed better only when the road users understand and follow the prescribed rules. A well disciplined road use is the only way to avoid fatal accidents. Well planned safety measures such as Road-dividers and other their well regulated use by all the Road-users are therefore very essential.

3. What precautions should motor cyclists take while overtaking?

    A motor cyclist should be very careful in overtaking. They should overtake as quickly as possible after getting the proceed signal by the driver ahead of him. They should give indications of his overtaking by horning and switching on the light of his motor cycle. They should assure themselves that no vehicle is approaching from the opposite direction.

    Bicycle is the most commonly used vehicle in India. We find a plenty of them in rural and urban areas. They should not stop suddenly without signalling. The riders of the bicycles should observe these safety measures.

    Never take a close slanting turn on the bends and turnings. They may slip or lose balance. They are prone to skid and turn-round on sudden application of the brakes. They should be extremely careful on wet and slippery roads. Avoid pot holes, wet and oily patches or sandy and boggy places on the roads.

   A two wheeled vehicle is prone to lose its balance if sudden brakes are applied at fast speed. Apply brake only when upright and in sufficient time. While applying brakes on turning they must prefer the low gear. Helmet is a must for all motor cyclists and scooterists. Pillion riders should not distract the driver by idle talk or cause imbalance to the vehicle.

    The main causes of accidents to scooterists and motor cyclists are: 

  • Rash driving
  • Lack of knowledge of traffic rules.
  • Poor maintenance of the vehicle.
  • Driving the vehicle in a drunken state.
  • Not observing the traffic signals.
  • Miscalculation of the speed of other vehicles while overtaking.
  • Getting into conversation with pillion riders.
  • Taking turns indiscriminately all of a sudden without giving proper signals.

9. What precautions should be taken by the motor cyclist for safe driving?

  • Every day we come over of many deaths of motor cyclists in newspapers and television channels. Some measures can be taken to avoid these fatal accidents. Some of them are:
  • They should not allow themselves distracted by the pillion rider.
  • They should possess a valid licence to drive.
  • They should use the right gear.
  • They should keep back where necessary from the vehicle ahead.
  • They should not overtake just before the zebra crossing.
  • They should wear a helmet. Helmet using is made compulsory now by the government of Andhra Pradesh to save the motor cyclist from head injuries.
  • Now for two and four wheelers pollution control check certificate is also needed.
  • They should not exceed the speed limit. It is better to drive slowly even the road is clear.

10. What are the safety measures to be observed by a cyclist?

      The chances of accidents to a cyclist are comparatively less when compared to those of a motor cyclist. Yet the cyclist has to take the following measures:

  1.  He should not stop suddenly without signalling.
  2.  He should drive slowly in the night.
  3.  He should not carry heavy load on his cycle while driving.
  4.  He should see that his is in perfect condition with brakes, light in the front and a red reflector at the back.
  5.  He has to slow down at zebra crossing, speed breakers, U turns, school zones etc.
  6.  He should not hold the chain of a moving vehicle.
  7.  If he wants to overtake, he should overtake from the right side after getting ‘proceed signals’ from the driver ahead of him.
  8.  He should not try to complete with the power driven vehicles.
  9.  He should not enter “No Entry” streets.
  10.  In peak hours there will be traffic jam. So he should wait for his chance at cross roads and proceed cautiously.
  11.  He should not drive recklessly in an uncontrollable speed.
  12. He should take the turns stretching his arms to indicate his right or left turn.
  13.  He should not ride along the road side of the road and cross the road without observing the speeding vehicles.
  14.  He should not try to overtake a vehicle in the process of taking a turn.
