                It includes all activities necessary for achieving a given objective . Programmes are combination of policies , procedures, rules and budgets .

              Planning is the process of deciding in advance what is to be done ., when it is to be done and by whom it is to be done. Following are the feature of planning .

              1 .     Goal oriented :-  The process of planning is done for the accomplishment of organisation goals.

              2 .     Primacy of planning :- Planning is the first function of management .

              3 .    Pervasiveness planning function takes at all levels of management .

              4 .     Continous process : - Planning is an on - going and dynamic process . Plans are prepared repeatedly for specific periods .

              5 .     Forward looking  :- Plans are prepared for future to achieve certain objectives forecasting is the essence of planning .

              6 .     Plans are prepared in anticipation of future events , Since future is uncertain required changes should be made flexible  -> Plans must be able to accomodate future changes .

              7 .     Planning involves choice planning involves selection of suitable alternative from various alternatives .

            Importance of Planning

             The importance of planning can be understood from the following points .

             2 .     Planning enables and organisation to cope up with uncertainty and changes .

             3 .     Planning is the basis for control . It provides standards for evaluation .          

             4 .    The activities of various departments are co -ordinated with the help of sub plans .

              6 .   Planning is thinking in advance it promotes innovative and creative thinking .

             The main steps in planning process are as follows .

              1 .     Setting the objectives :-  First step in planning premises is the establishment of objectives . The objectives must be specific and clear . The objectives of the entire organisation is laid down first objectives provide the nucleus to the planning process .

              2 .     Develop planning premises :-  Planning premises are the assumptions made about the future environment . Planning premises laid down the boundary within which plans are to be implemented.

              3 .     Determine alternative course of action :

                        There are alternative ways for achieving the same goal . These alternative course of action should be determined .

              4 .     Selecting the best alternative

                       After determining the various alternatives, they must be evaluated . After analysing the merits and demerits, the most suitable alternative is selected .

             5 .     Formulating derivative plans

                      Derivative plans means sub plans. Derivative plans are the break up of master plan on departmental  wise. Derivative plans are prepared to support the main plan .

             6 .     Implementation of plans : - The next step in planning process is the implementation of plans .ie, putting the plans into action to achieve the objectives. For this plans are communicated to employees in detail .

              7 .    Follow up : - It is the regular evaluation of plans to make sure that plans are proceeding  in the right lines .Remedial actions can be taken .

                5 .    Rules :- Rules are prescribed guidelines for conducting an action. Rules specify what should be done or not to be done in a given situation .

                6 .     Methods :-  Methods provide a detailed and specific guidance  for day to day action . A business can select a suitable method for doing a particular task .

                7 .     Peogrammers :- It includes all activities necessary for achieving a given objective .  Programmes are combination of policies , procedures , rules and budgets .
